The charcoal canister is mounted on the engine compartment bulkhead, and collects vapours from the fuel tank for burning in the engine rather than have them escape into the atmosphere. The canister and its pipework should be periodically checked for damage, especially if any fuel smells have been noted. A full check of the system can only be carried out by a Toyota dealer, but this should not normally be necessary.
