A: If a rack and pinion boot is torn, dirt and moisture can damage the steering gear. Replace it. Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. Remove the front wheels. Remove the tie-rod end and locknut. Remove the boot clamps and slide the boot off the tie-rod. Installation is the reverse of removal. Use new clamps on the boot. Tighten the lug nuts.
