Q:
How Do You Install a New or Reconditioned Cylinder Head, Including Fitting Coolant Hose Outlet Pipes and Valve Components? Posted by Customer
A:
If a new or reconditioned head is being fitted and the coolant hose outlet pipes at the transmission end are missing, obtain new ones and install them. Apply a thin layer of suitable adhesive to the bottom end of each pipe and press the radiator hose into the cylinder head to a depth of 15 mm. Press the bypass hose pipe in approximately 18 mm. Mark a line on each coolant hose outlet pipe to indicate the correct fitted depth, then press each pipe in squarely, starting by hand and tapping it home with a hammer and block of wood. Fit all sixteen valve spring lower seats into their original positions. Lubricate the valve stem oil seals with clean engine oil and push them into position in the cylinder head using a suitable socket, ensuring they are fully engaged with the valve guide. Lubricate the valve stems and insert them into their original locations, taking care not to damage the valve stem oil seal. Fit the valve springs and upper seats in their original locations. Compress the valve spring and locate the split collets in the recess in the valve stem, then release the compressor and repeat the procedure on the remaining valves. With all the valves installed, place the cylinder head flat on the bench and tap the end of each valve stem with a hammer and block of wood to settle the components. Finally, refit the previously-removed components.

Q:
How to remove the cylinder head? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the cylinder head, start by draining the cooling system. On later models, remove the plenum to gain better access. Remove the camshafts, exhaust manifold heat shield, and manifold. Disconnect the coolant hoses and various wiring plugs, earth leads, and brackets. Loosen the cylinder head bolts and remove them along with the washers. Carefully lift off the head, being mindful not to damage the lower face. Remove the old head gasket and tappets if necessary. To prepare for refitting, clean the mating faces of the cylinder head and block, remove any nicks or scratches, and check for warpage. Check the condition of the old head bolts and clean the bolt threads in the block. Refit the cylinder head by aligning the dowels and placing the new gasket correctly. Lower the head onto the block and tighten the bolts to the specified torque in stages. Finally, follow the reverse steps of removal, ensuring all fasteners are tightened and allowing time for sealant to cure before starting the engine. Check for any leaks after restarting the engine.
