Q:
How to install a cylinder head on V4 engine for Toyota Camry and 2007 through 2015 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
New cylinder head bolts should be used when installing the cylinder head. If you're working on a 2010 or later model, the manufacturer recommends removing the engine and transaxle assembly to perform this procedure. To begin the removal process, relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Drain the engine coolant and remove the drivebelt and alternator. Next, remove the valve cover, throttle body, fuel injectors, fuel rail, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, timing chain, and camshaft sprockets. On 2010 and later models, also remove the camshafts, lifters, and camshaft housing. Remove the variable valve timing controversy and label and remove the coolant hoses and electrical connections from the cylinder head. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in 1/4-turn increments using a 10 mm hex-head socket bit and a breaker bar. Lift the cylinder head off the engine block and remove any remaining external components for cleaning and inspection. When installing the cylinder head, ensure the mating surfaces are clean and use a gasket scraper to remove carbon and old gasket material. Clean the mating surfaces with brake system cleaner and check for any damage. Chase the threads in the cylinder head bolt holes and clean the holes with compressed air. Install the components that were removed from the cylinder head and position the new gasket over the dowel pins in the block. Apply RTV sealant to the ends of the cylinder head gasket on the timing chain cover side. Carefully set the cylinder head on the block without disturbing the gasket. Before installing the cylinder head bolts, apply a small amount of clean engine oil to the threads and under the bolt heads. Install the new cylinder head bolts and tighten them finger tight, then follow the recommended sequence to tighten the bolts to the torque. The remainder of the installation process is the reverse of removal. Wait at least four hours before adding oil and coolant and starting the engine. On 2009 and earlier models, check and adjust the valves as necessary. Change the engine oil and filter, refill the cooling system, run the engine, and check for leaks.
