Several fuel-related sensors can influence the ignition system. The most probable culprits for an ignition system fault are the crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, and knock sensor. The knock sensor's role is to detect pinking, a pre-ignition or detonation phenomenon that occurs under hot conditions or when running on low-quality or low-octane fuel. The sensor, which is screwed into the engine block, identifies specific vibrations created by pinking. When the knock sensor alerts the ECU, the ignition timing is delayed until the pinking stops, and then slowly advances again until pinking reappears. This process ensures maximum engine efficiency while preventing engine damage. The removal of the knock sensor requires the throttle body and inlet manifold to be taken off. Following this, the wiring plug is disconnected, and the sensor is unscrewed and removed from the engine. It's crucial when refitting to tighten the sensor to the specified torque for it to function properly.
