Q:
How to remove the Camshaft and Rocker Arm on V6 engine for Toyota Camry and 2007 through 2015 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
The manufacturer recommends removing the engine and transaxle assembly before starting this procedure. This procedure is not recommended for beginners. First, drain the engine oil and coolant. Then, remove the timing chains and sprockets. Before removing the camshafts from the rear bank cylinder head, ensure that the intake cam lobe for the No. 1 cylinder is facing 12 o'clock and the exhaust cam lobe is facing approximately 3 o'clock. Gradually loosen and remove the smaller bearing cap bolts, followed by the remaining housing bolts. Remove all five bearing caps and the intake and exhaust camshafts, keeping them in the correct order. Carefully pry the camshaft housing from the top of the cylinder head. Remove all rocker arms and lash adjusters, placing them in a labeled box. Inspect each rocker and lash adjuster arm for wear. Visually examine the cam lobes and bearing journals for any damage or overheating. Measure the height and diameter of each camshaft lobe and journal, replacing any that do not meet the specified limits. Check the oil clearance for each camshaft journal using Plastigage. If the clearance is greater than specified, replace the camshaft or cylinder head. Lightly lubricate the lash adjuster bores and install them along with the rocker arms in their original positions. Lubricate the camshaft journals and lobes with installation lubricant and install the camshafts, bearing caps, and camshaft housing in the correct sequence. Clean and apply RTV silicone sealer to the sealing surfaces, then tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Repeat the process for the front cylinder bank. Complete the installation by installing the timing chains, timing chain cover, and all associated components. Rotate the crankshaft by hand to check for any resistance. Refill the engine with oil and coolant, reconnect the battery, start the engine, and check for leaks.
