Inspect the upper and lower balljoints for looseness whenever the vehicle is raised for any reason. To check the balljoints, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Wipe the balljoints clean and inspect the seals for cuts and tears. If a balljoint seal is damaged, replace the balljoint. For the lower balljoint, attach a dial indicator to the lower control arm and check for play by pulling up and pushing down on the steering knuckle with a force of 65 pounds each way. If there is more than 0.020-inch of play, replace the balljoint. For the upper balljoint, pry up and down on the upper control arm while feeling for play in the balljoint. If there is significant play, replace the balljoint. Additionally, whenever the balljoints are separated from the steering knuckle or the upper or lower control arm, check if the ballstud can be turned in its socket. If the balljoint is loose or the ballstud can be turned, replace the balljoint. Toyota also specifies a bench test where the balljoint stud is flipped back and forth five times, and then the nut is installed. Using an inch-pound torque wrench, measure the turning torque by continuously turning the nut at a rate of one turn every two to four seconds. On the fifth turn, read the indicated torque. If the indicated turning torque is not within the specified range, replace the balljoint. Finally, it is important to note that the balljoints are not serviceable from the control arm and must be replaced as an assembly.
