Q:
What is the importance of replacing main and connecting rod bearings during an engine overhaul? Posted by Customer
A:
During the inspection of main and connecting rod bearings, it is important to replace them with new ones during an engine overhaul. However, the old bearings should be retained for close examination as they can provide valuable information about the engine's condition. Bearing failure can occur due to lack of lubrication, the presence of dirt or foreign particles, overloading the engine, or corrosion. Regardless of the cause, bearing failure must be corrected before reassembling the engine to prevent it from happening again. When examining the bearings, they should be removed from the engine block, main bearing caps, connecting rods, and rod caps, and laid out on a clean surface in the same position as their location in the engine. This allows for matching any bearing problems with the corresponding crankshaft journal. Dirt and foreign particles can enter the engine through various means, such as during assembly or passing through filters or the PCV system. These particles can end up embedded in the bearing material, causing damage. Lack of lubrication can be caused by excessive heat, overloading, oil leakage, or blocked oil passages. Driving habits, such as low-speed operation in high gears or short trips, can also affect bearing life. Incorrect bearing installation during engine assembly can lead to failure as well. To select the correct new bearings for engine reassembly, worn or damaged original bearings or incorrect oil clearances should be considered. The oil clearance, measured with Plastigage, should be used as a guide to ensure the bearings are the right size. Main bearings come in five sizes, and if the number on the original bearing is unclear, the main journal grade numbers stamped into the block and crankshaft counterweights can be used to determine the correct size bearings. For connecting rod bearings, the number stamped into the connecting rod cap should be matched with a standard size rod bearing. Ultimately, the oil clearance is the final judge when selecting new bearing sizes, and if there are any uncertainties, assistance can be sought from an auto parts store or a dealer parts or service department.
