Perform routine checks and maintenance on rear wheel bearings. First, ensure you have the necessary tools, including a torque wrench, and special grease. With the vehicle safely supported on jackstands, assess each wheel by spinning it, checking for noise, rolling resistance, and freeplay. To further inspect, grip the top and bottom of each tire and move the wheel in and out on the spindle, identifying any noticeable movement that may indicate bearing issues. In the repacking process, remove the wheel, pry the dust cap out of the hub, and remove the cotter pin from the nut lock. Discard the old cotter pin and utilize a new one during reassembly. Proceed to remove the nut lock cap, nut, and washer from the spindle's end. Gently pull the hub/disc assembly slightly and then push it back to dislodge the outer bearing, subsequently removing the hub/disc assembly from the spindle. Pry the seal out of the rear of the hub, noting its original placement. Remove the inner wheel bearing from the hub and use solvent to thoroughly clean all components, including the bearings, hub, and spindle. Carefully inspect for any damage or wear in the bearings and races, replacing them as needed. Next, use high-temperature front wheel bearing grease to repack the bearings, ensuring complete coverage between rollers, cone, and cage. Apply a thin coat of grease to the spindle at various points. Place the grease-packed inner bearing into the hub, followed by the new seal, and then position the grease-packed outer bearing. Install the washer and spindle nut, tightening it slightly to no more than 12 ft-lbs of torque. Spin the hub to seat the bearings and check the nut's tightness, making sure it remains at approximately 12 ft-lbs. Loosen the nut, then hand-tighten it snugly, installing a new cotter pin and lock cap. Bend the cotter pin's ends and trim any excess length. Install the dust cap by tapping it with a hammer. Finally, reattach the wheel, check the bearings, and lower the vehicle.
