Q:
How Do You Inspect, Adjust, and Replace the Alternator and Air Conditioning Compressor Drivebelts on 1997 through 2001 Toyota Solara and 1997 through 2001 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
The alternator and air conditioning compressor drivebelts, also known as V-ribbed belts or "fan" belts, are located at the right end of the engine. Their condition and adjustment are critical to the engine's operation. These belts stretch and deteriorate over time due to their composition and high stress, requiring periodic inspection. The number of belts used depends on the accessories fitted. One belt transmits power from the crankshaft to the alternator and air conditioning. If the vehicle has power steering, the pump is driven by its own belt. With the engine off, open the hood and locate the drivebelts at the left end of the engine. Check each belt for various signs of wear and replace if necessary. To check the tension of each belt, use a Nippondenso or Burroughs belt tension gauge. If these tools are not available, use the rule of thumb method. If the alternator/air conditioner compressor belt needs adjustment, loosen the alternator pivot bolt, adjust, and measure the belt tension. Adjust the power steering pump belt by loosening the adjustment bolt, pivoting the pump, and repeating until the tension is correct. To replace a belt, follow the adjustment procedures but remove the belt from the crankshaft pulley. If replacing the power steering pump belt, remove the air conditioning compressor belt first. It's recommended to replace both belts at the same time. Mark each belt and its pulley groove for proper replacement. Take the old belts to the parts store for direct comparison. After replacing the drivebelt, ensure it fits properly in the ribbed grooves in the pulleys. Adjust the belt(s) as outlined above.

Q:
How can the belts be inspected for the 2004 Toyota Solara? Posted by Customer
A:
The belts can be inspected by opening the hood and using a flashlight to check for signs of separation, core damage, rib cracking or separation, fraying, glazing, or worn ribs.
