With the engine off, use aerosol carburetor cleaner, a toothbrush, and a rag to clean the throttle body. Open the throttle plate to clean behind it. Do not clean the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) or Idle Air Control (IAC) valve with the solvent.

To ensure the proper functioning of the throttle system, perform the following checks and maintenance procedures. Verify that the throttle linkage operates smoothly and examine the vacuum at each port on the throttle body by detaching vacuum hoses and using your finger to compare observations with the vacuum table. Additionally, inspect the air intake duct for carbon and residue build-up and clean it with aerosol carburetor cleaner, ensuring it is safe for oxygen sensor systems and catalytic converters. For removal procedures on specific models, follow these steps accordingly. First, relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the air intake duct by loosening the hose clamps and detaching the accelerator cable from the throttle lever. If applicable, disconnect the throttle valve cable for vehicles with automatic transmissions. Label and detach all vacuum and coolant hoses from the throttle body, plugging coolant hoses to prevent leakage. Disconnect the electrical connector from the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and remove the throttle body mounting nuts/bolts to detach the throttle body and gasket from the intake manifold. For installation, reverse the removal steps and use a new gasket between the throttle body and intake manifold. Ensure proper tightening of the throttle body mounting bolts to the specified torque and check and adjust the coolant level as needed. In the case of removal on the Avalon model, remove the V-bank cover, intake duct, and resonator. Disconnect the accelerator cable and remove the bolt securing the throttle body to the throttle body bracket. Disconnect electrical connectors, wire harness clamps, and the brake booster vacuum hose. Disconnect coolant bypass hoses, air assist hoses, fuel vapor feed hoses, and vacuum hoses from the throttle body, plugging coolant hoses. Remove the nuts securing the No. 1 intake air control valve to the air intake plenum. Throttle body detachment is not necessary unless replacement is required. For installation, balance the two throttle bodies, use new gaskets between the No. 1 intake air control valve and intake plenum, and tighten the retaining nuts to the specified torque. Check and adjust the coolant level as needed. For adjustment, apply vacuum to the throttle opener, measure clearances between adjusting screws and throttle lever, and ensure correct clearances. Adjust the screws as necessary, following the specified steps. Finally, fully install the throttle body/No. 1 intake air control valve assembly.
