To remove the engine, start by positioning it at TDC on No 1 cylinder. Then, remove the cylinder head cover and spark plugs. Next, relieve the timing chain tension and disconnect it from the camshaft sprockets by painting alignment marks on the chain and unscrewing the timing cover plug. Use a pointed tool to turn the chain tensioner lockplate downwards and have an assistant turn the rear camshaft clockwise. Insert a drill bit to lock the tensioner plunger and lift the chain off the exhaust camshaft sprocket. Hold the inlet camshaft and remove the WT-i controller. Lift off the timing chain and secure it. Proceed to unbolt and remove the No 1 camshaft bearing cap, followed by the other caps and camshafts. When inspecting, check for wear, ovality, and damage on the camshafts and tappets. Measure the tappet diameter and check for wear on the camshaft lobes. Refit the tappets, oil them, and oil the camshaft lobes and bearings. Place the camshafts with the No 1 cam lobes facing upwards and refit the bearing caps, tightening the bolts progressively. Finally, refit the timing chain and sprockets, ensuring alignment of the paint marks, and check the valve clearances.

During the inspection, you should check the camshafts for wear, ovality, and damage. Additionally, measure the tappet diameter and inspect the camshaft lobes for wear.
