- A:The evaporative emissions control system functions to draw fuel vapors from the gas tank and fuel system, store them in a charcoal canister, and route them to the intake manifold during normal engine operation. A strong fuel odor is the most common symptom of a fault in this system. If such an odor is detected, an inspection of the charcoal canister, which is located under the vehicle directly behind the fuel tank, should be conducted. The evaporative emissions control canister and the hose connections should be checked for cracks and damage.
