Start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal and removing the engine cover. Then, disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil and remove the mounting bolt. Pull the coil straight up and out of the valve cover, ensuring the boot is in good condition before reinstalling.

The primary and secondary resistance checks for the ignition coil/igniter units used on certain Toyota and Lexus models do not apply to newer models. The only way to check these units is to substitute a known good unit, which is not feasible for a home mechanic. If all other possible causes of an ignition malfunction have been eliminated, a defective ignition coil/igniter unit is likely the cause. To check the primary resistance on certain models, disconnect the electrical harness connector(s) from each coil and connect an ohmmeter across the coil primary terminals. To check the secondary resistance, label and detach the spark plug wires from each coil and connect an ohmmeter across the two secondary terminals of each coil. If the resistance readings are not within specifications, the coil should be replaced. When replacing the ignition coil, disconnect the negative cable from the battery and follow the specific removal and installation procedures for four-cylinder or V6 models.
