Q:
What is a catalytic converter and how is it checked and replaced? Posted by Customer
A:
The catalytic converter is an essential emission control device incorporated into the exhaust system to reduce pollutants in the exhaust gas stream. There are two types of converters: the conventional oxidation catalyst, which reduces hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) levels, and the three-way catalyst, which also decreases oxides of nitrogen (NOx) alongside HC and CO. Checking the catalytic converter requires expensive and sophisticated test equipment. During underbody component servicing, it is advisable to inspect the converter for leaks, corrosion, dents, and other damages, paying attention to the welds and flange bolts that secure it to the exhaust system. If any damage is found, the converter should be replaced. While catalytic converters rarely break, they can become obstructed. To diagnose a restricted converter, a vacuum gauge can be used to assess the impact of a blocked exhaust on the intake vacuum. The process involves connecting the vacuum gauge to an intake manifold vacuum source, warming the engine to operating temperature, and noting the vacuum reading at idle and after quickly opening and releasing the throttle. If, after the fourth test, the reading is more than one in-Hg lower than the idle reading, there may be a restriction in the exhaust system. In such cases, the catalytic converter could be plugged, or an exhaust pipe or muffler could be restricted. When replacing the catalytic converter, it is recommended to spray the nuts on the exhaust flange studs before removing them and then proceed to remove the nuts and separate the catalytic converter from the exhaust system. The installation process is simply the reverse of the removal procedure.
