Frequent oil changes are essential for preventive maintenance to prolong the life of the engine. Aging oil becomes diluted and contaminated, leading to premature engine wear. Before starting the procedure, ensure that you have all the necessary tools and plenty of rags or newspapers to clean up any spills. Access to the underside of the vehicle is improved by lifting it on a hoist, ramps, or jackstands. Familiarize yourself with the location of the oil drain plug before getting under the vehicle. Park the vehicle on a level spot and allow the engine to reach its normal operating temperature. Remove the filler cap on the valve cover. Raise the vehicle and securely support it on jackstands. Place a drain pan under the drain plug and remove it, allowing the old oil to drain. Inspect the old oil for metal shavings and chips. Wipe off the drain plug and clean the area around the drain plug opening before reinstalling and tightening it. Move the drain pan under the oil filter and loosen the filter by turning it counterclockwise. Unscrew the filter from the block, ensuring that the oil inside the filter doesn't spill out. Wipe off the mounting surface on the block and remove any residue of old oil. Compare the old filter with the new one to ensure they are the same type. Smear engine oil on the rubber gasket of the new filter and attach it to the engine following the tightening directions. Add new oil to the engine through the oil filler cap, pouring five quarts of fresh oil. Check the oil level on the dipstick and install the filler cap hand tight. Start the engine and allow the new oil to circulate. Check for leaks at the oil pan drain plug and around the oil filter. Tighten if necessary. Recheck the oil level on the dipstick and add oil if needed. During the first few trips after an oil change, check for leaks and proper oil level. Dispose of the old oil properly by taking it to a recycling facility. Do not pour it on the ground or down a drain.

The next step is to place a drain pan under the drain plug and remove the drain plug to allow the old oil to drain.
