Frequent oil changes are recommended as the best form of preventive maintenance for home mechanics. As engine oil ages, it becomes diluted and contaminated, leading to premature engine wear. It is recommended to change the oil filter every time the oil is changed due to its minimal cost and ease of installation. Ensure the new filter is the same type as the old one and clean the area where the filter mounts. Apply a light coat of oil to the new filter's rubber gasket and attach it to the engine following the tightening directions. Remove all tools and lower the vehicle. In the engine compartment, locate the oil filler cap and pour three quarts of fresh oil into the engine. Wait for the oil to drain into the pan and check the level on the dipstick. Start the engine and allow the new oil to circulate briefly before shutting it off and checking for leaks. Once the filter is completely full, recheck the oil level and add enough oil to reach the full mark on the dipstick. During the first few trips after an oil change, regularly check for leaks and proper oil level. Dispose of the old oil properly by draining it into a suitable container for transport to an oil reclamation center, auto repair shop, or gas station.
