Q:
How to perform frequent oil and filter changes as crucial preventative maintenance procedures for DIY owners on Toyota Echo and Toyota Yaris? Posted by Customer
A:
Frequent oil and filter changes are crucial preventative maintenance procedures for DIY owners. As engine oil ages, it becomes diluted and contaminated, leading to premature engine wear. Before starting the procedure, gather all necessary tools and materials, including clean rags and newspapers for spills. It's best if the engine oil is warm for easier draining and removal of built-up sludge. Be cautious of hot engine parts and wear gloves to protect against scalding and harmful contaminants in used engine oils. Firmly apply the handbrake, jack up the front of the car, and support it on axle stands. Remove the engine lower covers for better access to the oil filter. Remove the oil filler cap and dipstick. Use a spanner or socket and bar to loosen the drain plug, position a draining container underneath, and remove the plug completely. Allow the oil to drain, repositioning the container as needed. Wipe the drain plug, inspect the seal/washer, and replace if damaged. Clean the area around the drain plug opening, then securely refit the plug. Position the container under the oil filter and use a removal tool to loosen and unscrew the filter by hand. Empty the oil from the old filter into the container and clean the sealing area. Apply a light coating of clean engine oil to the sealing ring of the new filter and screw it into place by hand. Remove all old oil and tools from under the car, then lower the car to the ground. Fill the engine through the filler hole with the correct grade and type of oil, adding half the specified quantity first and waiting for it to drain into the sump. Continue adding oil in small quantities until the level is up to the lower mark on the dipstick. Starting the engine, check for leaks around the oil filter seal and sump drain plug. The oil pressure warning light may take a few seconds to go out initially. Stop the engine, wait for the oil to settle, and recheck the level on the dipstick, adding more oil if necessary. Dispose of the used engine oil safely.
