Models from 1988 to 1990 do not have an access hole for Fuel Level Sensor removal, so the fuel tank must be removed to gain access. For models from 1991 to 1996, the middle seat needs to be removed to uncover the fuel pump access cover for testing and replacing the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor. Before testing the Fuel Level Sensor, determine the actual fuel level in the tank. On 1988 to 1990 models, check the resistance of the Fuel Level Sensor by locating the harness connector near the fuel tank from below. On 1991 and later models, remove the rear seat and the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor access cover. Disconnect the electrical connector of the Fuel Level Sensor and use an ohmmeter to check the resistance on the connector terminals. The resistance should be approximately 17 ohms when the tank is full for 1988 to 1990 models, and 3.0 ohms for 1991 and later models. When the tank is nearly empty, the resistance should be approximately 120 ohms for 1988 to 1990 models, and 110 ohms for 1991 and later models. If the readings are incorrect, replace the Fuel Level Sensor. The resistance of the Fuel Level Sensor can also be checked with the float arm completely down (tank empty) and with the arm up (tank full) when the Fuel Level Sensor is removed from the fuel tank. The resistance should change steadily from empty to full. To replace the Fuel Level Sensor, remove the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor assembly from the fuel tank. Carefully angle the Fuel Level Sensor out of the opening without damaging the fuel level float at the bottom of the assembly. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the screw from the side of the Fuel Level Sensor bracket to separate the Fuel Level Sensor from the assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal.
