Q:
How to thoroughly clean and inspect the cylinder head(s) and related valve train components, to determine the necessary valve service work during the engine overhaul on Toyota Solara and 1997 through 2001 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
Thoroughly clean the cylinder head(s) and related valve train components, followed by a detailed inspection, to determine the necessary valve service work during the engine overhaul. Scrape off all traces of old gasket material and sealing compound from the head gasket, intake manifold, and exhaust manifold sealing surfaces. Remove all built-up scale from the coolant passages and run a stiff wire brush through the various holes to remove any deposits. Clean the exhaust and intake manifold stud threads with a wire brush. Clean the cylinder head with solvent and dry it thoroughly. Clean the lifters, valve springs, spring seats, keepers, and retainers with solvent and dry them thoroughly. Scrape off any heavy deposits that may have formed on the valves, then use a motorized wire brush to remove deposits from the valve heads and stems. Carefully inspect the head for cracks, evidence of coolant leakage, and other damage. Check the head gasket mating surface for warpage. Examine the valve seats in each of the combustion chambers. Check the valve stem-to-guide clearance and valve stem deflection. Carefully inspect each valve face for uneven wear, deformation, cracks, pits, and burned areas. Measure the margin width on each valve. Check each valve spring for wear and measure the free length. Stand each spring on a flat surface and check it for squareness. Check the spring retainers and keepers for obvious wear and cracks. Replace any damaged or excessively worn parts. If the valve components are in generally poor condition and worn beyond the limits specified, reassemble the valves in the cylinder head.
