Q:
How to disassemble and inspect cylinder heads on Toyota Solara and 1997 through 2001 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
New and rebuilt cylinder heads are commonly available for most engines at dealerships and auto parts stores. Due to the fact that some specialized tools are necessary for the disassembly and inspection procedures, and replacement parts may not be readily available, it may be more practical and economical for the home mechanic to purchase replacement head(s) rather than taking the time to disassemble, inspect, and recondition the original(s). Cylinder head disassembly involves the removal of the intake and exhaust valves and related components. It is assumed that the lifters or rocker arms and camshaft(s) have already been removed. Before the valves are removed, arrange to label and store them, along with their related components, so they can be kept separate and reinstalled in the same valve guides they are removed from. Compress the springs on the first valve with a spring compressor and remove the keepers. Carefully release the valve spring compressor and remove the retainer, the spring, and the spring seat. Pull the valve out of the head, then remove the oil seal from the guide. If the valve binds in the guide, push it back into the head and deburr the area around the keeper groove with a fine file or whetstone. Repeat the procedure for the remaining valves. Remember to keep all the parts for each valve together so they can be reinstalled in the same locations. Once the valves and related components have been removed and stored in an organized manner, the head should be thoroughly cleaned and inspected. If a complete engine overhaul is being done, finish the engine disassembly procedures before beginning the cylinder head cleaning and inspection process.

Q:
How to remove and reinstall a cylinder head on V4 engine for 1997 through 2001 Toyota Solara and 1997 through 2001 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
Ensure the engine is completely cool before proceeding with the removal process. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and draining the coolant from the engine block and radiator. On Solara models, remove the front suspension upper brace. Additionally, drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter. Follow by removing the throttle body, fuel injectors, and fuel rail, as well as the intake manifold and exhaust manifold. Remove the timing belt, camshaft sprocket, and upper idler pulley, and take off the upper rear (no.timing belt cover. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor at this point. Continue by removing the camshafts and lifters, followed by the alternator and distributor. Unbolt the power steering pump, setting it aside without disconnecting the hoses. Label and remove any remaining items such as coolant fittings, tubes, cables, hoses, or wires. Now, you're ready to remove the cylinder head. Carefully loosen the cylinder head bolts in 1/4-turn increments until they can be removed by hand, taking care to loosen them opposite the recommended tightening sequence to prevent warping or cracking. Lift the cylinder head off the engine block, and if it's stuck, cautiously pry up at the transaxle end, beyond the gasket surface. Remove all external components from the head for cleaning and inspection. For installation, ensure the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block are impeccably clean, removing all traces of carbon and old gasket material. Check for nicks, deep scratches, or other damage on the block and head mating surfaces. Use a tap to chase the threads in the cylinder head bolt holes and clean them with compressed air. Run a die down the threads of each bolt to remove corrosion. Apply clean engine oil to the threads before installing the bolts, positioning them in their original locations, and tightening them following the recommended sequence. Lastly, reinstall the components removed earlier, set the valves, refill the cooling system, add oil, check for leaks, set ignition timing, and conduct a road test.
