Q:
How to remove and install cylinder heads on V6 engine for 1997 through 2001 Toyota Solara and 1997 through 2001 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
To begin the removal process, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and draining the cooling system, including the engine block. Proceed to remove the air intake plenum, intake manifold, exhaust manifold(s), alternator, and the timing belt along with the camshaft sprockets and upper idler pulley. If the timing belt isn't being replaced, you can leave the lower timing belt cover in place. Remove the bolts securing the number 3 timing belt cover and disconnect the coolant sensor connectors, removing the water transfer casting in the process. Extract the camshaft(s) from the head(s) you intend to remove and detach the engine wiring harnesses by undoing the bolts at the rear of the cylinder heads. Using an 8 mm hex bit or Allen wrench, remove the recessed head bolts (one in each head), followed by loosening the remaining cylinder head bolts in 1/4-turn increments until they can be removed by hand, adhering to the reverse order of the recommended tightening sequence. Carefully lift the cylinder head off the engine block, and if it's stuck, utilize a wood block and hammer to aid in removal. Repeat this procedure for the other head. For installation, ensure the mating surfaces of the cylinder heads and block are impeccably clean, removing all carbon and old gasket material with a gasket scraper and cleaning the surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Check for any damage on the block and head mating surfaces and rectify it if necessary. Chase the threads in the cylinder head bolt holes with a tap, clean them with compressed air, and run a die down the threads of each bolt to remove corrosion. Position the new gaskets over the dowel pins on the block, ensuring they are right side up and aligned correctly. Place the head on the block without disturbing the gasket. Apply a small amount of clean engine oil to the threads of the head bolts, install them in their original locations, and tighten them finger tight. Follow the recommended sequence to tighten the bolts, marking them for reference, and then tighten each 12-point bolt an additional 1/4-turn (90-degrees) in the same sequence. Finally, tighten the recessed bolt and repeat the procedure for the other cylinder head. Conclude the installation by refilling the cooling system, changing the oil and filter, running the engine, and checking for any leaks.
