Q:
How do you remove and install a cylinder head on V4 engine for 2002 through 2008 Toyota Solara and 2002 through 2006 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
Relieve the fuel system pressure, then disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Drain the engine coolant. Remove the drive belt and the alternator. Remove the valve cover. Remove the throttle body, fuel injectors, and fuel rail. Remove the intake manifold. Remove the exhaust manifold. Remove the timing chain and camshaft sprockets. Remove the camshafts and lifters. Remove the variable valve timing control valve. Label and remove the coolant hoses and electrical connections from the cylinder head. Using a 10 mm hex-head socket bit and a breaker bar, loosen the cylinder head bolts in 1/4-turn increments until they can be removed by hand. Lift the cylinder head off the engine block. Remove any remaining external components from the cylinder head to allow for thorough cleaning and inspection. Installation: The mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block must be perfectly clean when the cylinder head is installed. Use a gasket scraper to remove all traces of carbon and old gasket material, then clean the mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Check the block and cylinder head mating surfaces for nicks, deep scratches, and other damage. Use a tap of the correct size to chase the threads in the cylinder head bolt holes, then clean the holes with compressed air. Using a wire brush, clean the threads on each bolt to remove corrosion and restore the threads. Install the components that were removed from the cylinder head. Position the new gasket over the dowel pins in the block, with the "lot number" identification UP. Then apply RTV sealant to the areas at the end of the cylinder head gasket. Apply a bead of sealant on each side of the parting line between the cylinder head and the engine block. Carefully set the cylinder head on the block without disturbing the gasket. Before installing the cylinder head bolts, apply a small amount of clean engine oil to the threads and under the bolt heads. Install the bolts and their washers in their original locations and tighten them finger tight. Following the recommended sequence, tighten the bolts. The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal. Check and adjust the valves as necessary. Change the engine oil and filter. Refill the cooling system, run the engine, and check for leaks.
