Q:
How to remove and install cylinder heads on V6 engine for 2002 through 2008 Toyota Solara and 2002 through 2006 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
To begin the removal process, disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system, including the block. Proceed to remove the air intake plenum, intake manifold, exhaust manifold(s), alternator, and power steering pump. Remove the timing belt, camshaft sprockets, and upper idler pulley, taking note that if the timing belt isn't being replaced, it can remain on the lower timing belt cover. Remove the bolts securing the number 3 timing belt cover and disconnect the coolant sensor connectors, removing the water transfer casting as well. Proceed to remove the camshaft(s), disconnecting electrical connectors from VVT sensors and the timing oil control valve. Remove the rear cylinder head bolts and move engine wiring harnesses away from the heads. Utilize an 8 mm hex bit or Allen wrench to remove the recessed head bolts, then loosen and remove the remaining bolts by hand, adhering to the reverse order of the recommended tightening sequence. Lift the cylinder head off the engine block, and if it's stuck, employ a wood block and hammer for assistance. Repeat this procedure for the other head. For installation, ensure clean mating surfaces on the cylinder heads and block, eliminating carbon and old gasket material. Check for nicks or damage, addressing any issues with a file or machining if necessary. Clean the cylinder head bolt holes and threads, mounting each bolt in a vise and running a die down the threads. Position new gaskets over dowel pins in the block, placing the head on the block without disturbing the gasket. Apply a small amount of engine oil to the threads of the head bolts and install them in their original locations, tightening finger-tight before following the recommended sequence to tighten the bolts. Mark each bolt head and socket for reference. Tighten each 12-point bolt an additional 1/4-turn and then tighten the recessed bolt. Repeat this process for the other cylinder head. Complete the remaining installation steps in reverse order, including refilling the cooling system, changing the oil and filter, running the engine, and checking for leaks.

Q:
How to thoroughly clean and inspect the cylinder head(s) and related valve train components, to determine the necessary valve service work during the engine overhaul on Toyota Solara and 1997 through 2001 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
Thoroughly clean the cylinder head(s) and related valve train components, followed by a detailed inspection, to determine the necessary valve service work during the engine overhaul. Scrape off all traces of old gasket material and sealing compound from the head gasket, intake manifold, and exhaust manifold sealing surfaces. Remove all built-up scale from the coolant passages and run a stiff wire brush through the various holes to remove any deposits. Clean the exhaust and intake manifold stud threads with a wire brush. Clean the cylinder head with solvent and dry it thoroughly. Clean the lifters, valve springs, spring seats, keepers, and retainers with solvent and dry them thoroughly. Scrape off any heavy deposits that may have formed on the valves, then use a motorized wire brush to remove deposits from the valve heads and stems. Carefully inspect the head for cracks, evidence of coolant leakage, and other damage. Check the head gasket mating surface for warpage. Examine the valve seats in each of the combustion chambers. Check the valve stem-to-guide clearance and valve stem deflection. Carefully inspect each valve face for uneven wear, deformation, cracks, pits, and burned areas. Measure the margin width on each valve. Check each valve spring for wear and measure the free length. Stand each spring on a flat surface and check it for squareness. Check the spring retainers and keepers for obvious wear and cracks. Replace any damaged or excessively worn parts. If the valve components are in generally poor condition and worn beyond the limits specified, reassemble the valves in the cylinder head.
