New and reconditioned cylinder heads can be obtained from manufacturers or engine overhaul specialists. For home mechanics, it may be more practical and cost-effective to purchase a reconditioned head rather than dismantling and reconditioning the original head, especially since specialized tools may be required and new components may not be readily available. The following steps outline the process of removing the cylinder head:Remove the cylinder head.Remove all external brackets if not already done.Remove the tappets, ensuring proper storage of the components.Use a valve spring compressor to compress each valve spring and remove the split collets.If the spring upper seat does not free, tap the top of the tool with a light hammer.Withdraw the valve through the combustion chamber, deburring if necessary.Remove the valve stem seals using pliers, noting any color differences for inlet and exhaust valves.Remove the valve spring lower seats and store them with their respective springs.Keep the valves together with their collets, spring seats, and springs in their correct sequence, unless they are to be renewed. Place them in labeled containers. Note that the No 1 valve is closest to the timing chain end of the engine.

Thoroughly clean the cylinder head and valve components, ensuring all old gasket material and sealing compound are removed without damaging the surfaces. Clean the combustion chambers and ports, as well as the valves, using a wire brush and suitable solvent. If necessary, steam-clean the head and clean all oil holes and galleries. Inspect the cylinder head for cracks, coolant leakage, and other damage. Check the surface for distortion and the valve seats for pitting or burning. Replace or recut the valve seats if necessary. Replace worn valve guides and tappet bores. Examine the camshaft bearing surfaces. Inspect the valves for wear, pitting, cracks, and scoring on the stem. Measure the valve stem diameter and replace any valves with significant wear. Grind the valves into their seats using coarse and fine carborundum paste. Check the valve springs for damage and measure their free length. Replace any damaged or distorted springs. Inspect the tappets for scoring and wear ridges. Renew any necessary components. Replace the valve stem oil seals.

The reverse steps of removal should be followed, ensuring all fasteners are tightened and allowing time for sealant to cure before starting the engine.
