Q:
How to diagnose and replace a faulty horn in a Toyota Solara and Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
Before beginning electrical diagnosis, it is important to check the fuses. To test the horn, start by disconnecting the electrical connector from the horn. Then, connect battery voltage to the horn terminal using a jumper wire. If the horn does not sound, it needs to be replaced. However, if the horn does sound, check for voltage at the terminal when the horn button is depressed. If there is voltage, check for a bad ground at the horn. If there is no voltage, proceed to check the relay. If the relay is okay, check for voltage in the relay power and control circuits. If either circuit is not receiving voltage, inspect the wiring between the relay and the fuse panel. If both relay circuits are receiving voltage, depress the horn button and check the circuit from the relay to the horn button for continuity to ground. If there is no continuity, check the circuit for an open. If there is no open circuit, replace the horn button. Finally, if there is continuity to ground through the horn button, check for an open or short in the circuit from the relay to the horn. To replace the horns, open the hood and locate them in front of the radiator. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the bracket bolts. Installation is the reverse of removal.
