Proper operation of the A/C clutch is crucial for the air conditioning system to function effectively. If the system is not cooling, start by checking the clutch operation. With the engine warmed up, set the air conditioning temperature selector to the coldest setting and the fan to high. Open the doors to ensure that the system does not cycle off immediately after cooling the passenger compartment. Have an assistant press the AC button while observing the front of the compressor. The clutch should make an audible click and the center of the clutch should rotate. If it doesn't, turn off the engine and disconnect the A/C system pressure switch. Use a paperclip as a jumper and try the air conditioning again. If it works now, the system pressure may be too high or too low, and it should be tested by a dealer service department or air conditioning shop. If the clutch still doesn't operate, check the appropriate fuses, including the one marked "heater" in the interior fuse panel. Also, test the "MG CLT" relay and check for battery power at the number 1 socket. With the engine running and the air conditioning on, connect sockets 3 and 5 of the A/C clutch relay with a jumper wire and listen for the clutch to click. If the clutch still doesn't operate, turn off the engine, disconnect the clutch connector at the compressor, and use a jumper wire to check for continuity between the number 3 terminal of the clutch relay socket and the socket in the compressor clutch connector. If there is no continuity, check for an open in the circuit between the relay box and the compressor clutch connector. If there is continuity, check for an open in the circuit from the PCM to the relay box.
