Q:
What is the proper operation of the compressor clutch and how can it be checked if the air conditioning system is not cooling? Posted by Customer
A:
To check the proper operation of the A/C clutch in your air conditioning system, follow these steps. First, ensure that the engine is warmed up and set the air conditioning temperature selector to the coldest setting with the fan on high. Open the doors to prevent the system from cycling off too quickly. Ask an assistant to push the A/C button while you observe the front of the compressor. The clutch should make an audible click, and the center of the clutch should rotate. If it doesn't, turn off the engine and disconnect the air conditioning system pressure switch. Use a paper clip as a jumper and try the air conditioning again. If it works now, it indicates that the system pressure is too high or too low, and you should have your system tested by a dealer service department or an air conditioning shop. If the clutch still doesn't operate, check the appropriate fuses, including the "heater" fuse in the interior fuse panel. At the under-hood relay/fuse box, remove the "MG CLT" (compressor clutch) relay and test it. Check for battery power at the number 1 socket for the compressor clutch relay with the ignition off. Also, check the large heater relay. With the engine running and the air conditioning on, connect sockets 3 and 5 for the compressor clutch relay with a jumper wire and listen for the clutch to click. If the clutch still doesn't operate, turn off the engine, disconnect the clutch connector at the compressor, and attach a jumper wire to check for continuity between the number 3 terminal of the clutch relay socket and the socket in the compressor clutch connector using an ohmmeter. If there is no continuity, inspect the circuit between the relay box and the compressor clutch connector for an open. If there is continuity, check for an opening in the circuit from the PCM to the relay box.
