Q:
How to troubleshoot a power door lock system? Posted by Customer
A:
A power door lock system consists of switches, actuators, a control unit, and wiring. Diagnosis of any faults in the system can usually be done by checking the wiring connections and actuators for minor issues that can be easily repaired. The system operates through bi-directional solenoids located in the doors, with lock switches having two positions: Lock and Unlock. When the switch is activated, it sends a ground signal to the door lock control unit, which then reverses polarity to the solenoids to lock or unlock the doors. Some vehicles may have an anti-theft system incorporated into the power locks, and if troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, it is recommended to consult a dealer service department or qualified repair shop. It is important to check the circuit protection first, as some vehicles use a combination of circuit breakers and fuses. The door lock switches should be operated in both directions with the engine off, listening for the click of the solenoids operating. The switches should also be tested for continuity, and the wiring between the switches, control unit, and solenoids should be checked for continuity as well. A bad ground at the switches or control unit should be checked for. If all but one lock solenoids operate, the trim panel from the affected door should be removed to check for voltage at the solenoid while the lock switch is operated. If the inoperative solenoid is receiving voltage, it should be replaced. If it is not receiving voltage, the relay should be checked for an open or short in the wire between the lock solenoid and the control unit. In the case of a keyless entry system, it consists of a remote control transmitter that sends a coded infrared signal to a receiver, which operates the door lock system. The transmitter may also engage the alarm system and provide a panic button for emergencies. The transmitter batteries should be replaced when the red LED light on the case does not light up when the button is pushed, and the case halves can be separated using a coin or small screwdriver for battery replacement. The two lithium batteries should be replaced with the same type as originally installed, and the case halves should be snapped together.
