Q:
What is the purpose and importance of a catalytic converter? Posted by Customer
A:
The catalytic converter is a device that reduces harmful exhaust emissions by chemically converting poisonous gases into less harmful ones through an oxidizing reaction. It consists of a honeycomb structure made of ceramic material coated with precious metals like palladium, platinum, and rhodium, which act as catalysts to promote the chemical reaction. The converter generates heat during the reaction, making it hot after driving for several kilometers. However, the ceramic structure is fragile and can be damaged by rough treatment or driving through deep standing water, which may cause it to fracture and result in a blocked converter. It is important to use unleaded petrol, maintain the ignition and fuel systems, avoid driving with engine misfires, and not push or tow-start the car to ensure the proper functioning and longevity of the catalytic converter. Additionally, it is advised not to switch off the ignition at high engine speeds, use fuel or engine oil additives, continue using the car if it burns oil excessively, park in areas with high vegetation, or strike the converter during servicing. A sulphurous smell from the exhaust may be noticed, but it is usually related to the fuel's sulphur content rather than the converter itself. If a substantial loss of power is experienced, it could indicate a blocked converter, which may require replacement. A well-maintained and properly driven car should have a catalytic converter that lasts at least 100,000 kilometers before needing to be renewed.

Q:
How do you remove the manifold? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the manifold, start by jacking up the front of the car and supporting it on axle stands. Then, remove the bolts securing the manifold lower support bracket to the engine and disconnect the oxygen sensor wiring. Next, remove the bolts securing the manifold to the engine pipe and lower the front part of the exhaust. Remove the heat shield on top of the manifold and unscrew the bolts and nuts securing the manifold to the cylinder head. Carefully withdraw the manifold from the cylinder head studs and recover the manifold gasket. When refitting, make sure to use new gaskets for the manifold-to-engine pipe and manifold-to-head joints. It is recommended to use new nuts and clean the threads thoroughly if reusing old studs and bolts. Finally, tighten all fittings to the specified torque.
