Q:
How to check and troubleshoot a carbureted engine's fuel pump and lines for damage or leakage? Posted by Customer
A:
It is recommended to inspect the fuel pump and lines for any visible damage or fuel leakage. Additionally, check all hoses from the tank to the pump, particularly the suction hoses at the fuel tank and pump, as cracked hoses may prevent fuel from reaching the fuel pump. It is also possible for the fuel pump diaphragm to rupture internally, causing fuel to leak into the crankcase. If you notice excessive fuel consumption or a fuel smell without any external leaks, examine the engine oil for signs of fuel mixing. In such cases, the oil level will be unusually high, and the oil itself will be thinned out and have a fuel odor. To test the fuel pressure, disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor and install a T-fitting. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the T-fitting using a section of fuel hose, and reconnect the fuel line to the carburetor. Start the engine and let it idle. The pressure on the gauge should be between 2-1/2 to 8 psi and should remain constant. When the engine is shut off, the pressure should slowly return to zero. If there is an instant pressure drop, it indicates a faulty outlet valve, and the fuel pump needs to be replaced. If the pressure is too high, check if the air vent is plugged before considering pump replacement. If the pressure is too low, ensure that the fuel hoses and lines are in good condition and not obstructed, and then proceed with replacing the pump.
