Q:
How do you remove the oil pump on V4 engine for 1997 through 2001 Toyota Solara and 1997 through 2001 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the oil pump, start by taking off the oil pan, followed by the removal of nuts/bolts and detaching the oil pick-up tube assembly. Support the engine from above and proceed to remove the lower idler pulley, crankshaft pulley, timing belt, and crankshaft sprocket. Then, remove the 12 bolts to detach the oil pump case from the engine, and you may need to carefully pry between the front main bearing cap and the pump case with a screwdriver. Afterward, remove the two remaining bolts and separate the pump body from the case, lifting out the driven rotor and removing the O-ring. Clamp the pump sprocket in a padded vise and remove the sprocket nut and sprocket, followed by the drive rotor. Clean the pump case and engine block mating surfaces of sealant and old gasket material using a scraper and then clean them with lacquer thinner or acetone. Finally, remove the oil pressure relief valve snap-ring, retainer, spring, and piston for inspection. During inspection, clean all components with solvent and carefully examine them for wear and damage. Pay particular attention to the oil pressure relief valve piston sliding surface and valve spring. If there is any damage to the spring or valve, they should be replaced as a set. Check the driven rotor-to-case and drive rotor tip clearance with feeler gauges and compare the results to the specified values. If the clearance is excessive, replace the rotors as a set, and if needed, replace the oil pump case and body. For installation, remove the old drive rotor shaft seal and install a new seal using a deep socket and a hammer, applying multi-purpose grease to the seal lip. Repeat this procedure for the crankshaft seal. Install a new O-ring and lubricate the driven rotor with clean engine oil before placing it in the pump case with the mark facing out. Lubricate the shaft and install the drive rotor in the pump body, then reinstall the pulley and tighten the nut. Pack the pump cavity with petroleum jelly and attach the pump body to the case using the 16 mm-long bolts. Lubricate the oil pressure relief valve piston with clean engine oil and reinstall the valve components in the pump case. Place a new gasket on the engine block, ensuring that dowel pins hold it in place. Position the pump case against the block and install the mounting bolts, tightening them in a criss-cross pattern to avoid warping the case. Finally, install the oil pick-up tube assembly and baffle plate with a new gasket, tighten the fasteners, and proceed to reinstall the remaining parts in reverse order. After adding oil, start the engine, check for oil pressure and leaks, and recheck the engine oil level.
