If the water pump shaft bearings fail, there may be a howling sound at the front of the engine while it is running. Bearing wear can be felt if the water pump pulley is rocked up and down.

Non-toxic coolant is available at local auto parts stores. Although the coolant is non-toxic when fresh, proper disposal of used coolant is still required. For 2006 and earlier models, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and draining the cooling system. Then, remove the timing belt and camshaft sprockets. Next, remove the water inlet pipe and thermostat, as well as the number 3 timing belt cover. After that, remove the water pump retaining bolts/nuts and separate the pump from the engine. Thoroughly clean all sealing surfaces and remove any traces of old gaskets, sealer, and O-rings. Use a metal and rubber gasket when installing the water pump. Reinstall the pump and the remaining parts in reverse order, tightening the water pump bolts to the specified torque. Finally, refill the cooling system and run the engine to check for leaks and proper operation. For 2007 and later models, the process is slightly different. Start by removing the engine/transaxle assembly, alternator, and air conditioning compressor. Then, remove the upper front engine mount bracket, drive belt idler pulley assemblies, and drive belt tensioner. Use a special pin-spanner wrench to hold the water pump pulley and remove it. Remove the thermostat housing and the water pump, making sure to account for all 16 bolts. Install the new water pump and gasket, tightening the bolts to the specified torque. Finally, refill the cooling system and run the engine to check for leaks and proper operation.
