A failure in the water pump can lead to severe engine damage as it can cause overheating. To check the operation of the water pump while it is installed on the engine, there are three methods. If the pump is found to be defective, it should be replaced with a new or rebuilt unit. One way to check the water pump is by squeezing the upper radiator hose while the engine is running at normal operating temperature. If the water pump is functioning properly, a pressure surge should be felt upon releasing the hose. However, caution should be exercised to keep hands away from the fan blades, as the fan is computer operated and can turn on unexpectedly. Water pumps are equipped with weep or vent holes, and if coolant is leaking from the weep hole, it indicates a defective water pump. To check for leaks, a flashlight may be needed to locate the hole from underneath. In case of water pump shaft bearing failure, a howling sound may be heard at the drive belt end of the engine while it is running. Shaft wear can be detected by rocking the water pump pulley up and down, and if there is play in the shaft, the water pump should be replaced. It is important not to mistake drive belt slippage, which causes a squealing sound, for water pump bearing failure. Finally, the pump shaft should be turned by hand to check for any roughness in the bearing, and if roughness is felt, the pump should be replaced.

Remove the right-hand splash shield and the High Altitude Commentator (HAC) valve if applicable.
