A failure in the water pump can cause serious engine damage due to overheating. Water pumps on all models are equipped with a weep hole and a vent hole (Water pump air hole and water hole). If coolant leaks from any of these holes, replace the water pump. On V6 models, you can use a flashlight to find the hole(s) on the water pump by looking through the space behind the pulley just below the water pump shaft. On V8 models, the pump is driven by the timing belt and is behind the timing belt cover, so the hole can't be seen without removing the cover, but if the shaft seal fails, coolant will run out from the bottom timing belt cover. If the water pump shaft bearings fail, there may be a howling sound at the front of the engine while it is running. Bearing wear can be felt if the water pump pulley is rocked up and down.

Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Drain the cooling system. Remove the engine splash shield. Remove the engine cooling fan. Remove the upper and lower radiator hoses. For V6 models, remove the engine cover and air filter housing. Remove the water inlet assembly, idler pulleys, alternator, air conditioning compressor, and drivebelt tensioner. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and clean the gasket mating surfaces. Install a new gasket and water pump, and a new O-ring on the water pump. Install the water inlet assembly with new O-rings. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Refill the cooling system, run the engine, and check for leaks. For V8 models, remove the timing belt. Disconnect the bypass hose from the water inlet assembly and remove the water inlet. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and separate the pump from the engine block. Remove the O-ring from the coolant bypass pipe and replace it. Install a new gasket and water pump. Thoroughly clean the gasket surface of the water inlet assembly. Install a new O-ring and apply RTV sealant to the groove on the water inlet assembly. Install the water pump within five minutes of sealant application. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Refill the cooling system, run the engine, and check for leaks.
