Q:
How Do You Check and Replace Spark Plug Wires, Distributor Cap and Distributor Rotor on Toyota 4Runner,Toyota T100 and Toyota Tacoma? Posted by Customer
A:
The spark plug wires should be checked whenever new spark plugs are installed. Begin this procedure by making a visual check of the spark plug wires while the engine is running. In a darkened garage, start the engine and observe each plug wire. If there is a break in the wire, you will see arcing or a small spark at the damaged area. If arcing is noticed, make a note to obtain new wires, then allow the engine to cool and check the distributor cap and rotor. The spark plug wires should be inspected one at a time to prevent mixing up the order. Each original plug wire should be numbered to help identify its location. Disconnect the plug wire from the spark plug, checking inside the boot for corrosion. Push the wire and boot back onto the end of the spark plug, ensuring a tight fit. Wipe the entire length of the wire to remove built-up dirt and grease, checking for burns, cracks, and other damage. Remove the rubber boot (if equipped) and disconnect the wire from the distributor, checking for corrosion and a tight fit. Inspect the remaining spark plug wires, making sure each one is securely fastened at the distributor and spark plug. If new spark plug wires are required, purchase a set for your specific engine model and remove and replace the wires one at a time. Detach the distributor cap (if equipped) and look inside for cracks, carbon tracks, and worn, burned, or loose contacts. Pull the rotor off the distributor shaft and examine it for cracks and carbon tracks. Replace the cap and rotor if any damage or defects are noted. It is common practice to install a new cap and rotor whenever new spark plug wires are installed, but if you wish to continue using the old cap, check the resistance between the spark plug wires and the cap first. When installing a new cap, remove the wires from the old cap one at a time and attach them to the new cap in the exact same location.

Q:
How to check and replace spark plug wires,Distributor Cap and Distributor Rotor? Posted by Customer
A:
In the event of an accidental mix-up of the ignition wires, consult the firing order diagrams for the proper sequence. The spark plug wires should be checked at recommended intervals and whenever new spark plugs are installed. Begin by visually checking the wires while the engine is running in a darkened garage with ventilation. Look for arcing or sparks at damaged areas. Disconnect the negative battery cable and inspect each wire one at a time to prevent mixing up the order. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug using a removal tool or by grabbing the plastic boot. Inspect for corrosion and ensure a tight fit on the plug end. Wipe the wire clean and check for burns or cracks. Disconnect the wire from the distributor or coil pack, checking for corrosion and a tight fit. Check all remaining wires for secure fastening. If new wires are needed, purchase a set for your specific engine model and replace them one at a time. Also, check the distributor cap and rotor for wear, cracks, carbon tracks, and worn or loose contacts. Replace with new parts if defects are found, and always install a new cap and rotor when installing new spark plug wires.
