Q:
How to replace the rear main oil seal on V4 engine for 1997 through 2001 Toyota Solara and 1997 through 2001 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
The transaxle must be removed from the vehicle for this procedure. The seal can be replaced without removing the oil pan or removing the seal retainer, but it is not recommended due to the stiff lip of the seal which can be easily damaged during installation. If you choose to take the risk, pry out the old seal with a screwdriver and lubricate the crankshaft journal and the lip of the new seal with multi-purpose grease before pushing the new seal into place. However, the recommended method involves removing the oil pan and the seal retainer. After removing the oil pan, detach the seal retainer and remove any old gasket material. Position the seal and retainer assembly between two wood blocks on a workbench and drive out the old seal from the back side with a screwdriver. Drive the new seal into the retainer with a block of wood or a section of pipe slightly smaller in diameter than the seal. Lubricate the crankshaft seal journal and the lip of the new seal with multi-purpose grease and position a new gasket on the engine block. Slowly and carefully push the seal onto the crankshaft, using a smooth object like the end of an extension to work the stiff lip onto the crankshaft as you push the retainer against the block. Finally, install and tighten the retainer bolts, ensuring that the bottom sealing flange of the retainer does not extend below the bottom sealing flange of the block. The remaining steps are the reverse of removal.

Q:
How do you remove crankshaft and camshaft oil seals on V6 engine for Toyota Solara and 1997 through 2001 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the crankshaft oil seal, start by removing the timing belt and crankshaft timing belt sprocket. Cut away the seal lip with a razor knife and carefully pry the seal out of the engine using a screwdriver or seal removal tool. Clean the bore and coat the outer edge of the new seal with engine oil or multi-purpose grease, then drive the new seal into place using a seal driver or a socket with a slightly smaller outside diameter. Make sure it's installed squarely and to the same depth as the original. Reinstall the crankshaft timing sprocket and timing belt, being careful not to scratch the crankshaft sensor portion. Run the engine and check for oil leaks at the front seal. To remove the camshaft oil seals, start by removing the timing belt and camshaft sprocket(s). Remove the bolts and detach the rear timing belt cover. Carefully pry out the seal using a screwdriver wrapped with tape to avoid scratching the bore or damaging the camshaft. Clean the bore and coat the outer edge of the new seal with engine oil or multi-purpose grease, then drive the new seal into place using a seal driver or a socket with a slightly smaller outside diameter. Make sure it's installed squarely and to the same depth as the original. Reinstall the rear timing belt cover and tighten the bolts. Reinstall the camshaft sprocket(s) and timing belt.
