The seal should be pushed onto the crankshaft slowly and carefully, using a smooth object like the end of an extension to work the stiff lip onto the crankshaft.

So that the new seal can be installed to the same depth.

To replace the crankshaft oil seal, start by removing the timing belt and crankshaft timing belt sprocket. Cut away the seal lip with a razor knife and carefully pry the seal out of the engine using a screwdriver or seal removal tool. Clean the bore in the engine and coat the outer edge of the new seal with engine oil or multi-purpose grease. Apply the same grease to the seal lip. Use a seal driver or a socket slightly smaller than the seal's outside diameter to drive the new seal into place with a hammer. Make sure it's installed squarely and to the same depth as the original. Check the seal after installation to ensure the spring is in place. Reinstall the crankshaft timing sprocket and timing belt, being careful not to scratch the crankshaft sensor portion of the sprocket. Run the engine and check for oil leaks at the front seal. To replace the camshaft oil seals, remove the timing belt and camshaft sprocket(s). Remove the bolts and detach the rear timing belt cover. Carefully pry the seal out of the bore using a screwdriver wrapped with tape to avoid scratching the bore or damaging the camshaft. Clean the bore and coat the outer edge of the new seal with engine oil or multi-purpose grease. Apply grease to the seal lip. Use a seal driver or a socket slightly smaller than the seal's outside diameter to drive the new seal into place with a hammer. Ensure it's installed squarely and to the same depth as the original. Reinstall the rear timing belt cover and tighten the bolts. Reinstall the camshaft sprocket(s) and timing belt. Run the engine and check for oil leaks at the camshaft seal.

Drive the new seal into place using a seal driver or a socket with a slightly smaller outside diameter. Make sure it's installed squarely and to the same depth as the original.

The seal contact surface on the crankshaft should be carefully inspected for any damage that could cause oil leaks.

Ensure the spring of the seal did not pop out of place.

Remove the crankshaft pulley. Note how the Crankshaft Seal is installed - the new one must be installed to the same depth and facing the same way. Carefully pry the oil seal out of the cover with a seal puller or a large screwdriver. Be very careful not to distort the cover or scratch the crankshaft! Wrap electrician's tape around the tip of the screwdriver to avoid damage to the crankshaft. Apply clean engine oil or multi-purpose grease to the outer edge of the new seal, then install it in the cover with the lip (spring side) facing in. Drive the seal into place with a seal driver or a large socket and a hammer. Make sure the seal enters the bore squarely and stop when the front face is at the proper depth. Check the surface on the pulley hub that the seal rides on. If the surface has been grooved from long-time contact with the seal, a press-on sleeve may be available to renew the sealing surface. This sleeve is pressed into place with a hammer and a block of wood and is commonly available at auto parts stores for various applications. Lubricate the pulley hub with clean engine oil and reinstall the crankshaft pulley. Install the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and tighten it. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal.
