The removal and installation of the wheel bearing should be done by a professional using special tools. The axle shaft and seal should be inspected for wear or damage. To replace the seal, it should be removed with a slide hammer puller, and a new seal should be driven in using a seal driver or appropriately sized pipe and hammer. Before installing the axle shaft, multi-purpose grease should be applied to the lip of the oil seal. The contact surfaces of the axle housing and bearing retainer should be cleaned, and gasket sealant should be applied to both sides of the retainer gasket. The end gasket should be placed on the axle housing with the notch facing down. The axle and bearing retainer should be attached to the axle housing and the four retaining nuts tightened. After installation, the drain plug should be tightened and the differential filled with the proper lubricant.
