The manufacturer refers to the upstream sensor, located before the catalytic converter, as the air-fuel ratio sensor, and the downstream sensor, located after the catalytic converter, as the oxygen sensor. When replacing the oxygen sensor, it is important to note that it may be difficult to loosen when the engine is cold due to its installation in the exhaust manifold or pipe, which contracts when cool. To avoid damaging the sensor, it is recommended to start and run the engine for a minute or two before attempting to loosen it. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal before starting the replacement process. If replacing the downstream sensor(s), raise the vehicle and remove the lower engine cover to access the oxygen sensor harness and unplug the electrical connector. For the upstream sensor, it can be replaced without raising the vehicle. Unplug the sensor electrical connector and unscrew the sensor from the exhaust manifold(s) or exhaust pipe using a slotted socket. It is advisable to use a special slotted socket for removing the oxygen sensor, especially if planning to reuse it. If this tool is not available, caution must be exercised when unscrewing the sensor. Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the sensor to facilitate future removal, and ensure that new sensors already have this compound coated on the threads. If reusing an old sensor, recoat the threads with the compound. Install the sensor and tighten it securely, then reconnect the electrical connector of the pigtail lead to the main wiring harness.
