- A:The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is positioned on top of the transaxle and generates a pulsing voltage signal when its shaft rotates. This signal is monitored by the PCM to control the fuel and ignition systems as well as transaxle shifting. To check the VSS, disconnect the electrical connector and use a voltmeter to measure the voltage on the harness side. If no voltage is present, check for an open circuit. To further test the VSS, raise the front of the vehicle, secure it on jack stands, and block the rear wheels. Reconnect the electrical connector and back probe the VSS connector with suitable probes. With the ignition on and engine off, manually rotate one wheel while holding the other steady. The voltmeter should display a pulsing voltage between zero and 11 volts as the sensor rotates. If not, the sensor needs replacement. For replacement, disconnect the electrical connector, remove the hold-down bolt, and pull out the VSS. Don't forget to replace the O-ring.
