Q:
How to disconnect, remove, and reinstall the Throttle Position (TP) sensor on Lexus RX330 and Toyota Highlander? Posted by Customer
A:
On 1999 through 2003 models, the TP sensor is located on the throttle body, while on 2004 and later models, the TP sensor is an integral part of the electronic throttle body and is not removable. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. If necessary, remove the engine cover. Disconnect the TP sensor electrical connector by depressing the release tab and pulling off the connector. Then, remove the two sensor mounting screws and the sensor, this process is the same for both four-cylinder and V6 engines. When removing the TP sensor from the throttle body, especially on V6 models, be aware of limited space between the TP sensor and the firewall. If it's difficult to loosen the sensor screws, consider removing the throttle body and trying again. For installation, position the TP sensor 30 to 60-degrees counterclockwise from its installed position, then rotate it clockwise until the mounting holes in the TP sensor align with those in the throttle body. Complete the installation by following the removal procedure in reverse.

Q:
What is the Throttle Position Sensor and how do you diagnose and replace it on Toyota Avalon and Toyota Solara? Posted by Customer
A:
To check the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), follow these steps. The TPS is located on the end of the throttle shaft on the throttle body and monitors the throttle valve angle for fuel delivery control. First, check the reference voltage from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to the TPS by disconnecting the TPS electrical connector and measuring the voltage between terminal number 1 and the ground with a voltmeter. The reference voltage should be around 4.5 to 5.5 volts with the ignition key turned ON. If the voltage is incorrect or absent, check the PCM. Next, check the TPS signal voltage by reconnecting the electrical connector and back-probing terminals 2 andWith the ignition key turned ON and the throttle fully closed, the voltage should be approximately 0.3 to 1.0 volts. Slowly opening the throttle should increase the voltage to the specified range depending on the engine type. If the readings are outside the specified range, replace the TPS. For TPS replacement, ensure the ignition key is in the OFF position and disconnect the electrical connector from the TPS. Remove the screws securing the TPS to the throttle body and take out the TPS. To install the new TPS, follow the reverse order of removal.
