Q:
How do I remove and install a driveaxle on a Toyota Tundra and Toyota Sequoia? Posted by Customer
A:
Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Block the rear wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling off the stands. Remove the wheels. Drain the differential. Remove the grease cap. Remove the cotter pin and nut lock, place a prybar or large screwdriver between the wheel studs to hold the Axle Shaft and break the Axle Shaft/hub nut loose with a large breaker bar, or have an assistant apply the brakes. Remove the nut. Disconnect the lower control arm from the balljoint. If you're removing the left Axle Shaft, remove the left side shock absorber. Knock the Axle Shaft loose from the steering knuckle with a brass drift and hammer. Do NOT use a steel punch or strike the end of the Axle Shaft with a steel hammer; a steel punch or hammer will damage the threads or the splines on the end of the Axle Shaft. Swing the steering knuckle outward and pull the Axle Shaft assembly out of the steering knuckle, then detach the Axle Shaft from the differential. If you're removing the right Axle Shaft, tap the inner CV joint out of the differential with a hammer and a brass drift; if you're removing the left Axle Shaft, a slide hammer with a special hooked adapter (available at most auto parts stores) will be needed to pull the inner CV joint from the differential. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the Axle Shaft/hub nut, then install the nut lock and a new cotter pin. Tighten the lug nuts. Tighten all suspension fasteners. For rear (Sequoia models), loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Block the front wheels to keep the vehicle from rolling off the stands. Knock the Axle Shaft loose from the knuckle with a brass drift and hammer.
