- A:To remove and install a Axle Shaft on a vehicle, start by raising the rear of the vehicle and supporting it on jackstands. Then, place alignment marks on the Axle Shaft-to-differential and the Axle Shaft-to-stub shaft flanges. If it is a 1987 or later model, remove the Axle Shaft/hub nut from the outer end of the Axle Shaft. Next, remove the four retaining nuts on the inner joint and the four on the outer joint for 1982 through 1986 models, or the six retaining nuts for 1987 through 1992 models, and detach the Axle Shaft.
