Q:
What are the step-by-step instructions for removing and installing the front and rear driveaxles? Posted by Customer
A:
In the front, for removal, start by removing the wheel cover or hub cap and unstaking the nut with a punch or chisel. Break the hub nut loose using a socket and large breaker bar, then loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Proceed to remove the wheel and drain the transaxle lubricant. Remove the nuts and bolt securing the ball joint to the control arm, prying the control arm down to separate it from the ball joint. Remove the Axle Shaft/hub nut and swing the knuckle/hub assembly out to free the end of the Axle Shaft from the hub. If working on the right-side axle of a four-cylinder model, remove the support bearing bracket bolts or the snap-ring for V6 models. Carefully pry the inner end of the Axle Shaft from the transaxle or intermediate shaft using a screwdriver or prybar. Support the CV joints and remove the Axle Shaft. For installation, pry off the old spring clip from the inner end of the Axle Shaft and install a new one, lubricating the differential or intermediate shaft seal with grease. Raise the Axle Shaft into position while supporting the CV joints and insert the splined end of the inner CV joint or intermediate shaft into the differential side gear, ensuring the spring clip locks in its groove. Apply grease to the outer CV joint splines, install the stub axle into the hub, reconnect the ball joint to the lower control arm, and tighten the nuts. Install a new Axle Shaft/hub nut and tighten it securely. Check the seating of the Axle Shaft in the transaxle and complete the installation steps. In the rear for 4WD models, the process involves similar steps. Remove the wheel cover or hub cap and break the hub nut loose. Loosen lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely. Remove the wheel, ABS sensor lead clamps, and parking brake cable bracket. Take off the bolts securing the control arms to the rear knuckle, remove the Axle Shaft nut, and pull the Axle Shaft assembly out of the rear knuckle. Carefully pry the inner end of the Axle Shaft from the differential using a screwdriver or prybar. Support the CV joints and remove the Axle Shaft. For installation, follow the same steps as in the front, including removing and installing a new spring clip, lubricating the differential or intermediate shaft seal, and raising the Axle Shaft into position while supporting the CV joints. Insert the splined end of the inner CV joint or intermediate shaft into the differential, apply grease to the outer CV joint splines, and reconnect the control arms to the rear knuckle. Install a new Axle Shaft/hub nut, tighten it securely, and check the Axle Shaft's seating. Install the wheel, lower the vehicle, and complete the remaining torque specifications and transaxle lubricant refill.
