Q:
How to remove and replace rear axle shafts and Wheel Seal for 1979 through 1981 Toyota Supra? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the axle shafts, the vehicle must be raised and supported securely on jack stands, with the front wheels blocked. The rear wheels, brake calipers, and discs should be removed, and the differential oil drained. The brake line and bearing retainer nuts should be disconnected, allowing the axle shaft to be pulled out. If necessary, a slide hammer can be used. The removal and installation of the wheel bearing should be done by a professional using special tools. The axle shaft and seal should be inspected for wear or damage. To replace the seal, it should be removed with a slide hammer puller, and a new seal should be driven in using a seal driver or appropriately sized pipe and hammer. Before installing the axle shaft, multi-purpose grease should be applied to the lip of the oil seal. The contact surfaces of the axle housing and bearing retainer should be cleaned, and gasket sealant should be applied to both sides of the retainer gasket. The end gasket should be placed on the axle housing with the notch facing down. The backing plate and bearing retainer should be placed on the axle shaft, aligning the gasket notches with the hole in the bearing retainer. The axle and bearing retainer should be attached to the axle housing and the four retaining nuts tightened. After installation, the drain plug should be tightened and the differential filled with the proper lubricant. The brake disc and caliper should be installed, the brakes bled, and the wheel tightened with lug nuts.
