- A:To remove the starter motor assembly from the engine compartment, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. Then, remove the engine cover(s) and the air filter housing and air inlet duct. Next, detach the electrical connectors from the starter/solenoid assembly. - A:For Highlander models with a 2GR-FKS engine, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and remove the battery and battery tray. For 2GR-FE models, simply remove the battery. Then, remove the air filter housing and air intake duct. For 1999 through 2003 V6 models, remove the starter motor first, then disconnect the electrical connectors. For RX350 models with a 2GR-FKS engine, disconnect the transaxle shift control cable and remove the bracket mounting bolts and bracket from the transaxle.
