Q:
How to change the transmission fluid and Automatic Transmission Filter on Toyota 4Runner without a dipstick? Posted by Customer
A:
On 2005 and later models without a dipstick, the manufacturer recommends changing the transmission fluid at 60,000-mile intervals under severe service conditions. To perform this procedure, wait for the engine to cool down completely. Purchase the specified transmission fluid and a new filter. You will also need a floor jack, jackstands, a drain pan, newspapers, and clean rags. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Place the drain pan underneath the transmission pan and remove the drain plug. Let the fluid drain completely and reinstall the drain plug. Remove the transmission pan rock shield (if equipped) and the pan mounting bolts. Use a rubber mallet to tap on the pan and break the gasket seal between the pan and the transmission case. Lower the pan and separate the lower part of the dipstick tube from the upper part. If they are stuck, unbolt the bracket at the upper end of the tube from the cylinder head. Drain any remaining fluid from the pan. Remove the filter retaining bolts from the valve body and remove the filter. Inspect the pan, filter, and fluid for any signs of damage or wear. Clean the pan and remove any old gasket material from the transmission case or valve body. Install new gaskets on the filter and tighten the bolts. Apply a bead of RTV sealant to the pan mating surface and reinsert the filler tube onto the dipstick tube. Place the pan against the transmission case and tighten each bolt to the torque. For 2004 and earlier models, lower the vehicle and add approximately 1-1/2 quarts of transmission fluid through the filler tube. Start the engine and move the gear selector through each range. Check the fluid level and add fluid as needed. Check for leaks under the vehicle during the first few trips and check the fluid level again when the transmission is hot.
