Q:
How to remove a fuel tank from a Toyota Matrix? Posted by Customer
A:
Remove the fuel filler cap to relieve fuel tank pressure. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Siphon or pump the fuel into an approved container using a siphoning kit or hand-operated pump, available at most auto parts stores. Remove the fuel pump access cover and disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector and fuel lines from the fuel pump unit. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. Remove the center exhaust pipe, and remove the fuel tank heat insulator from the vehicle. After removing the rear exhaust system, remove the bolts and the fuel tank heat shield. In smaller models, the entire exhaust may have to be removed. Detach the parking brake cables from the underbody and position them aside. If equipped, remove the plastic protective panel(s) for access to the fuel tank. Disconnect the fuel lines, the vapor return line, and the fuel filler hose. Remove the clamp that retains the fuel filler hose and separate the fuel hose disconnects. Be sure to plug the hoses to prevent leakage and contamination of the fuel system. Support the fuel tank with a floor jack. Place a sturdy plank between the jack head and the fuel tank to protect the tank. Remove the bolts from the fuel tank retaining straps. Lower the tank enough to disconnect the electrical connector and ground strap from the fuel pump/fuel gauge sending unit, if you have not already done so. Remove the tank from the vehicle. Installations the reverse of removal.
