2004 Toyota Sienna Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: Is it more practical and economical for the home mechanic to purchase replacement cylinder heads rather than disassembling, inspecting, and reconditioning the originals for the 2004 Toyota Sienna?
A: Most cylinder heads can be purchased from automobile dealers and auto part stores from the new ones or remanufactured ones. There are often tools necessary for disassembly and special inspection that may not be available to a home mechanic coupled with the probability that replacement parts are difficult to come by, it may be easier and cheaper for the home mechanic to always resort to purchasing new heads. It means that the intake and exhaust valves together with other related parts have to be pulled out, given that the lifters, rocker arms, and the camshaft have presumably already been pulled out. Before the removal of the valves, efforts should be made to label as well as store the valves together with its component so that they may be fitted in the same valve guides as before. To take out the first valve the following processes need to be followed; use the spring compressor to compress the coil springs and then unscrew the keepers, take out the retainer, spring and if available the spring seat. Release the pressure on the valve and pull it out of the head to remove the oil seal from the guide; if the valve gets stuck in the head, push the valve back into it and apply deburr to the surfaces round the keeper groove. Perform the same operation on the rest of the valves, storing all components for the later reassembly. When all the valves and other components have been removed and then put away, the head should be wiped down and scrutinized; if a person is going to do a comprehensive rebore of the engine then finish with the head while beginning the disassembly of the cylinder head.
